About

Our Story

A community shaped by the gospel and our Ethiopian heritage.

Christ Memorial Mekane Yesus is a congregation of Ethiopian believers and friends who gather in St. Louis to worship Jesus Christ, study His Word, and serve one another. We trace our roots to the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus — a Lutheran-rooted body that has carried the gospel across Ethiopia for more than a century — and we walk alongside our partners at Christ Memorial Church, Saint Louis.

Our gatherings carry the warmth of Ethiopian worship — heartfelt singing, communal prayer, and the rich teaching of Scripture — and welcome anyone who longs to know Jesus. Whether you grew up in the church or are stepping into a sanctuary for the first time, there is a place for you here.

Where we come from

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) was born in the late 1950s out of the work of Swedish, German, American, and Norwegian missionaries who served alongside Ethiopian evangelists. Today it is one of the largest Lutheran bodies in the world and a vibrant witness to Christ across Ethiopia and the diaspora. Our congregation carries that same tradition of biblical preaching, congregational singing, and outward-facing mission.
